The best locations for family photography in and around Zurich

Looking for the best family photography locations in and around Zurich? You’re spoilt for choice — this city and its surroundings offer more beautiful settings than any family could ever use up (and as a family photographer in Zurich, I keep discovering new ones).

Here are four favourites I come back to again and again — each with my tip for the best time of day. Because here’s a little photographer’s secret: the right light matters more than the prettiest backdrop.

My favourite family photography locations in Zurich — and just outside it

1. The Old Town of Zurich

Cobbled lanes, painted shutters, the river glinting between the houses — the Old Town gives your family photos that unmistakable Zurich feel. It’s also wonderful for families with kids who like to explore: every corner is a new little adventure, and I just follow along with the camera.

My tip: Book an early morning session. The light is soft, the lanes are still empty, and you’ll have the city almost to yourselves — plus, small children are usually at their sunniest before the day gets long.

3. Halbinsel Au

A small peninsula reaching into Lake Zurich — vineyards, wide meadows, old trees and water views in every direction. Perfect for families who want space to run, and for images that feel like a summer memory even in May or September.

My tip: Late afternoon, as the sun starts to sink behind the hills. That golden backlight makes hair glow, softens everything it touches, and turns an ordinary meadow into pure magic.

3. The Botanical Garden of Zurich

Lush, green and quietly beautiful — with winding paths, hidden corners and the famous glass domes. Because so much of it is green year-round, it’s a wonderful choice when you want that fresh, natural look outside the summer months.

My tip: Early morning again — the light filtering through the leaves is at its best, and you’ll share the paths with little more than a few blackbirds.

4. Klöntaler See

About an hour’s drive from Zurich, and worth every minute: mountains reaching straight down to the lake, and water in a blue you have to see to believe. All of it makes my photographer’s heart skip a beat.

The photos in this section were taken there in autumn, during a little portrait session with my daughter. As you can see, the location isn’t just wonderful for family photography — it’s equally stunning for senior portraits, capturing your children as they finish school.

My tip: Klöntaler See works beautifully year-round — but autumn, when the mountainsides turn golden, is when it truly shows off.
