3 Tips for your Newborn Photography Session

📆 When to schedule your session

You may have heard that you should schedule your newborn session within the first 2 weeks after giving birth. While this is more important for posed newborn sessions where your baby needs to be asleep for posing, I would still recommend scheduling your session early for a lifestyle newborn session as well, for the following reasons: a) newborns change and grow SO fast, so capture them in all their tinyness early!
b) many newborns develop newborn acne, which usually appears between 2-5 weeks of age.

👗 What to wear

Simple is best. Comfort is key. Keep colors neutral - but don’t be afraid to add a little bit of color! Whites, creams, grey, and subdued colors always photograph the best and make for timeless images. Try and avoid bright and bold colors, super dark colors like black and dark blue, and shirts with large logos on them because all that can take away from the overall feel and look of your images. We want the focus to be on you and your little one, not what your shirt said! 😉

🪄 How to prep

Please do not feel the need to clean your entire house before the session. I’m a mom too, of two rather messy girls. So literally nothing scares me. 😂 However, if you can, try and declutter items on counters/floors in the spaces you’d like me to photograph in. Less is more when it comes to newborn sessions.
Something else to consider: your bedding. Your big bed is usually a great place to photograph you snuggling with your newborn, however bedding in bright and bold colors will cast shadows and colors on skin, leaving a tint of whatever color the blanket is. So if you can, keep it simple and plain. Whites and creams are always ideal to ensure aesthetically pleasing images to the eye.
If possible, try and keep your house a bit warmer than usual. Babies love being warm and cuddly and when the house is cold, they’ll let you know if they don’t like it.

Lastly, and most importantly: relax!! We will go with the flow and follow your baby‘s lead, take feeding breaks as needed. You can just focus on enjoying your little one, and let me capture your wonder! 😍

‚Wow, war ich wirklich mal sooo klein?‘ Meine Kinder lieben es, Babyfotos von sich in unseren Familienalben anzuschauen. Und ich ebenfalls - sie versetzen mich direkt zurück in die damalige Zeit, die so erfüllt war von Staunen, Wärme, Liebe… und erinnern mich an all die winzigen Details!

‚Wow, was I really this tiny?‘ My kids love looking at their baby photos in our family albums. And I love it too - the images bring me right back to that special time, filled with wonder, warmth, love… and they remind me of all those precious details!

Let’s talk about Senior photos — no, not portraits of elderly people, but photos of kids in their final year of school.

Except... they’re not really kids anymore, are they?

They’re young adults, on the edge of something big. About to leave the familiar behind — maybe even moving across the world for university. And suddenly, this phase of life, this season as a family under one roof, feels painfully fleeting.

I used to think Senior photos were just an American trend. But now that I have my own Senior — my daughter — I see them for what they really are: a way to hold on. To freeze this moment in time.
This is our last year as a family with two school-aged kids. Probably our last year of all four of us living together. And I want to remember every bit of it.

At the same time, I see her — the young woman she’s become. Her spirit, her confidence, her sense of direction. Her whole future stretched wide open in front of her. I want to capture that too — not just for me, but for her.
